The directive was officially published on 5 July and came into force on 25 July 2024. Member States have until 26 July 2026 to incorporate it into their national laws. The rules will start applying to companies on 26 July 2027, with a phased approach over the next few years.
From 26 July 2027, it will apply to EU companies with more than 5,000 employees and a global turnover of €1.5 billion, as well as non-EU companies generating over €1.5 billion in the EU. By 26 July 2028, it will cover EU companies with over 3,000 employees and €900 million in global turnover, along with non-EU companies generating over €900 million in the EU. Finally, by 26 July 2029, all other companies that fall under the directive’s scope will be included.
