Technical Screening Criteria

The Taxonomy is structured based on six environmental objectives that are:

1) climate change mitigation,

2) adaptation to climate change,

3) pollution prevention and control,

4) transition to a circular economy,

5) sustainability and protection of water and marine resources and

6) protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.

The EU Taxonomy Regulation defines criteria for determining the environmental sustainability of an activity.

To identify if an economic activity substantially contributes to an environmental objective, so-called Technical Screening Criteria (TSC) must be applied.

To identify if an economic activity does not significantly harm any of the remaining environmental objectives, the so-called Do No Significant Harm Criteria (DNSH) must be applied.

Plus, the economic activity has to meet ‘minimum safeguards’ such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights to not have any negative social impacts.
