Products with a high environmental impact and potential for improvement will be prioritized

The ESPR’s all about making sustainable products the norm on the EU market and reducing their overall environmental and climate harm.

DPP apply to a wide range of product categories, but according to the ESPR’s provisional agreement, products with a high environmental impact and potential for improvement will be prioritized. These products include:

  • Textiles
  • Furniture
  • Chemicals
  • Batteries
  • Consumer electronics
  • Electronic devices
  • Construction products

The new rules will apply to all products on the EU market, regardless of whether they are produced inside or outside the EU. The regulation includes strict requirements on how companies manage their products.

Sustainable product is likely to display following characteristics:

  • Use energy more efficiently
  • Longer durability and reliability
  • Can be easily repaired, reused and maintained
  • Parts can be easily disassembled and put to further use
  • Contains fewer substances of concern and more recycled content
  • Can be easily recycled
  • Reduce waste, including packaging.
  • Has a lower carbon and environmental footprint over its lifecycle
  • Improve the availability of information on product sustainability

Next to Ecodesign criteria, the ESPR will introduce a Digital Product Passport for all regulated products. This will be an easily accessible tag on the products that makes sustainability information instantly available to supply chain actors, regulators, and consumers.
