Digital Product Passports (DPP) & Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)

by

Digital Product Passports are one part of many regulations intended to deliver the EU Green Deal’s aim of net zero emissions and will help unlock the circular economy potential.

To improve the transparency of product’s value chains, EU will implement new legislation requiring nearly all products sold in the union to have a Digital Product Passport (DPP) in place, as a key component of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force on 18 July 2024.

The ESPR will introduce a Digital Product Passport (DPP), a digital identity card that provides comprehensive information about products, components, materials, and its entire value chain.  This includes everything from the origin of the product, materials used, environmental impact, and disposal recommendations.

This information will be accessible electronically, making it easier for consumers, manufacturers, and authorities to make more informed decisions related to sustainability, circularity and regulatory compliance.

Information to be included in the DPP will be identified by the Commission, in close consultation with all relevant stakeholders, and will depend on the specific product in question.
